Second Place Finisher Will Power Clinches Road/Street Championship
Dario Franchitti edged out points leader and dominant road course driver Will Power, picking up his second win of the season, and first at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, in The Honda Indy™ 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by Westfield Insurance
Franchitti passed IZOD IndyCar Series points leader Will Power twice out of the pits during the course of the event and eventually held him off by the slim margin of .5234 of a second for the remainder of the 85-lap race.
With the win, Franchitti, a driver for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, trimmed the points lead held by Team Penske driver Will Power. Power finished in second, and with the podium finish clinched the Mario Andretti road/street course championship. Helio Castroneves finished third.
The Firestone Indy Lights race, one of the day’s two undercards, was won by Martin Plowman for AFS Racing. It was his first win in the series. He edged out Dan Clarke by .8443 of a second.
In the first race of the morning, the second of the weekend for the World Challenge Championships, James Sofronas drove to the overall and GT class win, just sneaking across the finish line ahead of Andy Pilgrim. In the GTS class, Peter Cunningham finished first in an Acura TSX. Lastly, Ryan Eversley stood atop the podium in the series’ TC category.
The race rounded out a weekend filled without on-track racing. Five series including the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron, IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights, SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge, and Patron GT3 Challenge by Yokohama.
