Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Focuses on Fans During Marquee Event of its 50th Season

8/2/2011
Fireworks, autograph sessions, a drumline and more expected on August 5-7

DUBLIN, OHIO (August 2, 2011) – Beginning on July 28 by opening an IZOD IndyCar Series test day for free, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is going all out for its fans during the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge & The Honda Indy® 200 at Mid-Ohio weekend August 5-7.

Five autograph sessions, a pair of American Le Mans Series ‘Tech Talks’ and the upgraded INDYCAR Fan Village lead the list of returning activities, that also includes several new facets. A number of items new to 2011 include a beer garden on Championship Row (open to the public), performances from the popular Columbus-based Saints Drumline and Drill Team, a fireworks show and improved fan access during pre-race and victory lane activities.

“Guest experience has been a priority for all of us and I am proud of what we have been able to integrate into the doubleheader weekend in such a short time,” said Craig Rust, president of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “We are just getting started and we are going to constantly look at ways that we can improve or add to the guest experience for all of our events moving forward.

Some IZOD IndyCar Series drivers will head to the Infield’s Fan Village for an autograph session the evening of Friday, August 5 at 5:45 p.m. with others there Saturday, August 6 at 3:30 p.m. The American Le Mans Series pilots are available in the Upper Paddock at noon on Saturday, August 6, hours before the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge. The future stars of Cooper Tires Prototype Lites will sign autographs on Friday at 1:30 in the Infield. The World Challenge Championships autograph session is on Saturday at 1:30 at the Optima Battery display in the Infield.

As the American Le Mans Series is often regarded as one of the more technologically advanced race series in the world, it’s easy to struggle to keep up with the gadgets, science and software that teams use each season. Fans with Paddock Passes are invited to two Tech Talks located at the transporters of Extreme Speed Motorsports on Friday at noon and Muscle Milk Aston Martin Racing on Saturday at 11:30. ALMS 101 will provide those in attendance with a close look at the science and strategy behind the series.

Founded in 2003 with just children, the 44-member Saints Drumline have performed at Red, White & Boom, the Ohio State House and the Schottenstein Center along with a previous appearance at Mid-Ohio in 2006. The group will perform during pre-race festivities on Saturday and Sunday with additional performances around the grounds throughout the weekend.

The beer garden is open to the public and will be located on the western end of Championship Row in the Infield, close to Turn One. The fireworks display will be centered in the Infield and begin after dark on Saturday, August 6, expected to be around 10 p.m. The huge Fan Village is the spot to be for IZOD IndyCar Series fans, with merchandise, race simulators, TVs and more. Pre-race and Victory Circle activities for the Honda Indy® 200 have been moved to the Infield, adjacent to Championship Row. Fans are invited to fill the grass area in front of the new Victory Circle prior to pre-race and post-race celebrations.

Weekend General Admission tickets start at $60 when ordered in advance, prior to Wednesday, August 3 at 5 p.m. EDT. General parking is free and children 12 and under are also admitted free. Visit www.midohio.com anytime or call 800-MID-OHIO (643-6446) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. to order tickets or for more information.
