Westfield Insurance and The Mid-Ohio School will welcome more than 120 students and parents/guardians to its Honda Teen Defensive Driving Program on Monday, August 4, as a part of the Westfield Insurance Road Safe Teens Program.
First announced as a new safety initiative in April, Road Safe Teens will provide inexperienced teenage drivers with the necessary skills to succeed at accident avoidance by practicing emergency driving situations in a safe and controlled environment. As customers of Westfield Insurance, the official insurance company of The Mid-Ohio School, participants were chosen from Westfield agents’ offices throughout Ohio.
“The Road Safe Teens program is a way we can give back to our community and policy holders by helping them protect the newest drivers in their household,” said Roger McManus, chief operating officer of Westfield Insurance. “It’s about preparing our teens for a lifetime of safe driving. Mid-Ohio has an excellent program, and we’re happy to partner with them on this initiative.”
To start their day at The Mid-Ohio School, teens will start with a classroom session discussing the physics and dynamics of good driving and hear presentations. A Westfield Insurance representative will talk about the benefits of being a safe driver and an Ohio State Highway Patrol Officer will discuss the responsibility of operating a vehicle in the presentation sessions.
Teens will then put their knowledge into practice in the Honda Vehicle Dynamics Center by participating in three drills that simulate emergency driving situations. In the skid car, teens take control of a Honda Civic EX Coupe equipped with hydraulically controlled outriggers that allow the passenger-side instructor to initiate a skid. The teen’s objective is to maintain control of the car. Students also pilot their Civics through emergency lane change and wet braking drills with the ABS braking turned on and off.
“By partnering with Westfield Insurance for this Road Safe Teens program, we have the unique opportunity to change teens’ lives for the better,” said Michelle Trueman Gajoch, president of TrueSports, Inc., owner and operator of The Mid-Ohio School and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “When teens leave our facility, we can be satisfied in knowing that we’ve prepared them for real driving situations that they will face everyday behind-the-wheel of their own cars.”
