WBNS-TV, Kenda Tires, and The Mid-Ohio School partner for “Maria's Message” defensive driving event

7/23/2014
COLUMBUS, OH, JULY 23, 2014 ― WBNS-10TV and Maria’s Message have partnered with Kenda Tires and The Mid-Ohio School to teach local teens about defensive driving. This first of three planned events, will take place on Wednesday, July 30 in the Thirty-One Gifts parking lot, located at 3425 Morse Crossing, Columbus, OH 43219, from 9am to 4:30pm (across Easton Way Drive, from Easton Town Center). The event will allow three groups of drivers to gain classroom experience, as well as road course experience with certified instructors from The Mid-Ohio School. Representatives from Kenda Tires will also be on site providing tire safety tips to the attendees.

“Maria’s Message is such an important and necessary effort that Kenda Tires is proudly supporting. Our focus at the Distracted Driving Events will be educating the community on the importance of tire safety, a subject matter that does not get enough awareness,” said Jeff Pizzola, COO at Kenda Tires USA. “As a central Ohio based company, we are proud to be making a difference in our local communities.”

“The Mid-Ohio School is very proud to be teaming up with Maria’s Message and helping teach young drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.” said Craig Rust, President of The Mid-Ohio School. “Our mobile Teen Defensive Driving program will help reinforce the distracted driving message by putting the kids behind the wheel in a controlled environment and hopefully teach them not only that they need to be 100% focused when operating a vehicle but also give them some basic defensive driving skills that will last a lifetime.”

Maria Tiberi, 21, was killed on September 17, 2013 in a tragic distracted driving accident near Hilliard, Ohio. In February, the station launched “Maria’s Message” through a series of public service announcements. 10TV, Tiberi and his wife, Terri, along with children, Dominic and Kelsey, have committed to raising awareness of distracted driving, while promoting defensive driving through Maria’s Message.

“Dom and his family have been tireless in their efforts to teach kids about the dangers of distracted driving,” said John Cardenas, President and General Manager of WBNS-10TV. “This a great interactive way for the kids to get experience behind the wheel with instructors from The Mid-Ohio School.”

More than 100 teens will have the opportunity to attend the class free of charge. Two more similar events are being planned in the next two months. The third event will take place in September, which was recently designated “Safe Driving Awareness Month,” by Governor Kasich, in honor of Maria Tiberi and other victims of distracted driving.

WBNS-10TV is a member of The Dispatch Broadcast Group, which also includes WBNS-AM//FM in Columbus and WTHR-TV in Indianapolis, Indiana.
