Who is racing this weekend at Mid-Ohio?
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship features two styles of cars – Prototype (P), which showcases the latest automotive technology and are uniquely designed for the racetrack, and Grand Touring (GT), which is based on road-going production models. These two styles of cars make up the series’ three classes – Prototype (P), GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD).
IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship CLASSES:
The Prototype (P) class features the fastest and most technologically advanced cars in North America. They are specifically designed and engineered for the race track and look drastically different than a typical street car. These cars follow either the Daytona Prototype international (DPi) model or the classic LM P2 model.
The GT Le Mans (GTLM) cars are the most elite and fastest GT cars on the track. They are based on production models and are engineered to extract the maximum performance possible. The class serves as a true proving ground for leading manufacturers such as BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, and Porsche.
The GT Daytona (GTD) cars are enhanced technology. They are also based on production model cars but do not feature the same level of aerodynamics and power as the GTLM class cars. The GTD class consists FIA GT3-spec cars and is the only Pro-Am class in the WeatherTech Championship.
The IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge features sports cars from worldwide manufacturers, straight from the showroom floor, raced side-by-side with only minor modifications. The Continental Tire Challenge has three different classes – Grand Sport (GS), Touring Car (TCR) and Street Tuner (ST).
