Cameron Beaubier Leads An Ultra-Close Q1 As The Pack Closes In On Ben Spies’ Lap Record
LEXINGTON, OH (August 16, 2024) – Ben Spies’ 16-year-old Superbike lap record at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will live for at least another day as Tytlers Cycle Racing’s Cameron Beaubier flirted with the mark but couldn’t quite get it done on a sunny and breezy day at the iconic racing facility.

LEXINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 16, 2024) - Superbike racing has officially returned to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course today for the first time since 2014 with the Permco MotoAmerica Superbikes at Mid-Ohio three-day event, Aug. 16-18.
The last time Cameron Beaubier turned a wheel in anger at Mid-Ohio Sport Car Course was the last time the AMA Superbike Series raced at the iconic track – 10 years ago. Beaubier won race one and was second in race two. Fast forward to now and it was Beaubier who was best on the day in the Dunlop official test that leads into this weekend’s Permco Superbikes at Mid-Ohio event.
Beaubier’s best lap was a 1:24.126 and it came in the second of the four sessions on an overcast day at Mid-Ohio and he was the only rider in the top five to do his best lap in the second session – even though he led all of the first three sessions and elected to sit out the fourth session due to a light rain falling.
With weather seemingly always a factor when the AMA Superbike Series visited Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and the track needing a resurface to allow races to be safely held in the rain, delays “back in the day” were commonplace. But the last of the AMA Superbike races held at the iconic racetrack, prior to this coming weekend’s MotoAmerica races on a repaved racetrack, was all of that in a nutshell.

When Jacobsen put two impressive passes on Scholtz in places you wouldn’t expect at the very next round at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to snatch two victories, the heat was turned up even more. And Herrin arrives at Mid-Ohio as the leader of the 2024 MotoAmerica Steel Commander Superbike Championship in the series’ return to the Buckeye State after a 10-year hiatus.
With MotoAmerica set to bring AMA Superbike racing back to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 16-18, we’re taking a closer look at past Superbike races at the iconic racetrack in Lexington, Ohio.
It took Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha’s Josh Hayes virtually all of the 2013 AMA Superbike Championship to gain back the points lost in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. At Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Hayes finally took over the lead in the championship after the first of two races – by just a single point over Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas.
